Are You Able to Solve It? The Forgotten Dutch Invention That Shaped the Contemporary Globe
One can find many candidates to claim the title of “world’s most significant invention.” The wheel. The printing press. The combustion motor.
According to a new book, however, that title should go to the automated sawmill conceived through Dutch inventor Corneliszoon van Uitgeest in 1593.
“Prior to mechanised cutting, building a modest merchant vessel required around 10 lumberjacks working over three months,” writes the author. “With wind-powered sawmills, an identical amount of processed timber might be produced within a week.”
Owing to this speedy mechanical saw, which turned timber into planks with virtually no manual labor, Dutch builders could construct ships faster compared to anyone else, an advantage that unleashed one hundred years of Dutch naval, financial as well as artistic supremacy in Europe and the world.
The Original True Manufacturing Device
The inventor's sawmill, argues Dávila, was “mankind’s first true industrial apparatus.” A wind turbine rotated a gear. A single part converted the circular motion into vertical action for the saw. A separate mechanism changed the rotary motion into a sideway’s motion feeding the log toward the cutter. A ratchet system moved the wood ahead a measured step per cycle.
“Every component seemed modest on its own. Corneliszoon’s genius was to combine these parts in order that the machine operated within a precisely synchronized sequence, sawing on every downward motion and moving on every return stroke. This constituted an astonishingly clever application of fundamental components.”
