Bolsonaro detained after being declared a risk of fleeing
Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.
The ex-president was sentenced of orchestrating a government overthrow in last fall and handed more than over two decades in prison, but he remained under home detention pending legal challenges.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" emerged.
This encompassed attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a summons to a demonstration that could "allow for a chance to flee".
Court Filing Details Escape Concerns
In a paperwork permitting the arrest, Justice Moraes said information from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his escape.
