Democratic lawmakers Criticize Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Capital Punishment
Lawmakers from the Democratic party voiced anger after former President Donald Trump accused a coalition of Democratic representatives of being "traitors" and asserted they should be detained and punished "by death" following their posting of a contentious video.
The Recording That Sparked the Controversy
The video footage, shared on Tuesday, showcases six Democratic lawmakers who in the past served in military or security roles.
"Similar to us, you all took an oath to protect and support this founding document," the representatives stated in the brief video. "At present, the dangers to our democratic foundation are not only from foreign nations, but from within our own country. Our laws are explicit, you can reject illegal orders, you can decline illegal orders, you have to decline improper directives. No one has to execute directives that break the law or our founding principles."
Trump's Incensed Reaction
The recorded statement reportedly prompt a angry response from the ex-president.
On Thursday morning, Trump published on Truth Social: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In a separate message, he wrote: "This constitutes really concerning, and Harmful to our Country. Their statements cannot be enabled to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent publication, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also reposted a declaration that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Party Leaders Answer
Following Trump's comments on that day, Top Democrats published a joint statement denouncing the statements.
"Violent politics has no place in this nation," they wrote. "Congress members who participated in the video all served our nation with exceptional patriotism and excellence. We unequivocally censure Donald Trump's appalling and dangerous death threats against members of Congress, and call on House Republicans to forcefully do the same."
The party representatives also mentioned that they had been in touch with protective services "to ensure the protection of these members and their families."
"Donald Trump must immediately remove these extreme online messages and retract his violent language before he gets someone killed," the declaration added.
Officials' Defiant Answer
The representatives who participated in the video also released a statement.
"We are veterans and national security professionals who value this nation and took an oath to protect and support the founding document of the United States," they declared. "That oath continues forever, and we intend to honor it. No intimidation, coercion, or promotion of aggression will stop us from that important obligation."
"The most revealing aspect is that the ex-president considers it subject to penalty by death for us to reiterate the statutes," they continued. "Our service members should recognize that we have their support as they carry out their pledge to the founding principles and duty to follow only proper directives. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our duty."
They added: "The entire nation must come together and censure the ex-president's requests for our murder and ideological conflict. This is a period for moral clarity."
More Governmental Comments
The Opposition leader also denounced Trump's comments and posted on online networks: "We must be absolutely clear: the President of the United States is requesting the death of government members."
He stated: "This constitutes an clear THREAT. Each congressional member, each house member, all citizens – without partisan consideration – should condemn this without delay and absolutely."
The Republican House speaker justified Trump's claim that the Democrats had engaged in "rebellion", labeling the video as "wildly inappropriate", adding: "This constitutes very harmful, you have important representatives of Congress advising troops to defy commands, I think that is historic in American history."
The Conservative representative also reportedly informed media outlets that in what he examined of Trump's publications, Trump was "describing the crime of rebellion" but that "legal experts have to examine the language and establish all that."
Executive Branch Statement
During a executive branch meeting on later that day, when questioned by a journalist, "Would the president want to execute elected officials?", the executive branch representative responded: "Absolutely not."
"Let's be clear about what the president is responding to," the spokesperson declared. "You have active officials of the US Congress who conspired to organize a digital communication to personnel of the national defense, to serving soldiers urging them to defy the president's lawful orders."
She said: "The sanctity of our defense system depends on the command structure, and if that chain of command is broken, it can lead to people getting killed, it can lead to confusion, and that is exactly what these members of Congress ... are basically promoting."
