India's capital Awakens to Toxic Smog After Festival of Lights
As Tuesday dawned residents of the planet's dirtiest urban center found themselves inhaling dangerously toxic air that was classified as the "alarming" range.

Multiple areas of the city registered an AQI exceeding 500, which equals a tenfold increase over the recommended level set by the World Health Organization.

For the past four years, authorities had enforced a complete ban on the purchase and ignition of pyrotechnics during the Festival of Lights due to their significant contribution to the dangerous haze that covers the city as the cold season sets in.
Nevertheless earlier this year, the recently formed city leadership appealed to the highest court to request a relaxation of the restrictions.

Much to the frustration of environmental and health campaigners, judges complied with the request, stipulating that environmentally conscious fireworks could be ignited during limited hours throughout the celebrations.

Many recording stations throughout the city showed air quality reaching highest levels around midnight to some of the worst levels observed during the festival in at least the past three years.
