Jurgen Klopp says a return to coach Liverpool is conceivable.
Jurgen Klopp, who stepped down from Anfield in 2024, indicated that rejoining the club is an option. Klopp, following a hugely successful nine-year spell that included a European Cup triumph and ending the club's long wait since 1990, now holds roles as head of global soccer with the Red Bull group and in an advisory capacity to Germany's league body.
Supporters’ Hopes and His Frank Comments
Liverpool won the league title last season, though countless followers holding him in high esteem would welcome the possibility that he might come back one day. Speaking candidly, he told his interviewer: “I said I will never coach another team in England. Therefore in case it's my former club...yeah. In theory, it could happen.”
“At 58 years old, so I might decide later on, who knows. Is a decision required immediately? Then I will not coach again. Fortunately, no such pressure exists. I'll simply watch what the future brings.”
What Would Lure Him Back?
When asked about the specific conditions would have to unfold to bring him back to the touchline, he revealed he feels no immediate pull to such a return. “It's unclear to me, I enjoy my current role,” he stated. “No longing for management; I don’t miss standing in the rain for two-and-a-half or three hours; I don’t miss going to press conferences repeatedly each week or doing numerous chats weekly.
“No nostalgia for the changing area as a dressing room, however, dining out with the team having a nice chat, I appreciate that. Success was frequent thus frequently a very good mood at the club. Remaining with me is Virgil [Van Dijk’s] laugh ringing in my ears for example.”
Praise for His Successor
He spoke highly of the current boss, crediting him due to the changes which secured the championship last term. Liverpool have lost a string of losses in all competitions post heavy investment, but he rubbished the idea it could be the start of a downward turn.
“[Liverpool have] an incredible striker in Flo[rian] Wirtz, doubters will be silenced with negative comments. A remarkable prospect. Ekitike, incredible player. This is a well-built well-judged squad. You don’t have to worry regarding the Reds, they will be fine.”
Emotional Tribute for Diogo Jota
He shared movingly regarding the passing of Diogo Jota, a player he signed while in charge, along with the consequences at the club. Jota was killed in a vehicle collision alongside his brother this past summer.
“Can you substitute somebody like Diogo? It goes beyond his on-field talent, it’s the guy he was. I can’t imagine the squad without him in it. I still cannot speak properly about it. A profound tragedy for his teammates as well. Nobody at Liverpool will ever use it as an excuse yet it's the reality. Being in that space which he filled completely. Dealing with that individually is challenging. Unbearable.”
