Manchester United Poised to Sign German Striker Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move from Bayern Munich.
A Marquee Acquisition for the WSL Side
Schüller, who has half a year left on her contract, is known as a prolific goalscorer for her club and the national team. Having netted over 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. This signing is viewed as a major coup for the WSL side.
Departure from Bayern was expected after she appeared to be holding back emotions while applauding the club's fans following a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
It was reported in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its top forwards. Per reports, the formalities for the move have now been completed.
Reliable Goal Threat to Strengthen United's Attack
The experienced striker's arrival is expected to provide a significant boost to United’s attacking options. Schüller has been highly consistent with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.
- Over seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the last term, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Gathering Steam at Old Trafford
The acquisition of the German international comes at a time when United appear to be gathering positive momentum.
Their recent performances include qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the mid-season window has brought additional business:
- The signing of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The new deal for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since joining in 2023.
On the midfielder's new deal, a club official stated: “She has become a critical component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability allows her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having arrived from a side from the NWSL, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
