The most severe projected effects of the climate crisis for the UK have been outlined by experts, including a scorching 4C increase in average temperatures to a 2-metre surge in ocean levels. Another scenario foresees a decline of 6C in temperature following the failure of critical Atlantic Ocean currents, which would severely impact agriculture and power requirements.
Plausible Extremes, Not Predictions
These effects, some of which are connected to climate tipping points, are seen as low probability but plausible. The scientists stated that these projections filled a gap in planning that had rendered the UK ill-prepared for catastrophic possibilities.
"The worst-case scenarios we have mapped should not be seen as certainties, but they are plausible," commented the lead researcher who led the study. "The nation has been making preparations lacking the frameworks to test against catastrophic outcomes. We've now given decision-makers what they need to get ready for climate outcomes they wish to avoid, but must not overlook."
A Range of Severe Conditions Possibilities
A further series of severe models sets out the possible scale of severe conditions between now and the close of the 2100s. These show that thermometer readings could skyrocket in particular seasons by up to 6C higher than the norm, while precipitation could be triple normal levels.
The probability of the catastrophic events coming to pass remains uncertain due to a lack of certainty about what steps will be taken to address global warming and how the planet's climate will respond. This research was likened to security threat evaluations or stress tests for the banking sector.
Key Scenario Details
- Severe Heating: Planetary heating rising well above 4C by 2100 could happen if emissions cuts fails or if powerful amplifying effects including the Amazon rainforest dying emit its vast reserves of carbon. This would result in intense and enduring heatwaves and dry spells affecting the UK in summer.
- Ocean Circulation Failure: A critical sea current, the North Atlantic current, is losing strength and losing stability due to global heating. A complete failure beginning in 2030 would lead to a six-degree temperature drop in the UK. "Crop production would be severely challenged and water supplies would be drastically changed," noted the professor.

This work was requested as part of a government’s climate resilience programme. Earlier reports have cautioned that insufficient focus was being paid to low‐likelihood but high‐impact risks.
The government's climate advisors has recommended that the UK must "adapt to 2C" and evaluate the risks for 4C. Past policy documents have been described as being "very weak" by environmental groups.
