Seattle's LGBTQ+ Pride to Proceed for World Cup Despite Objections by Egypt and Iran
Plans for Pride-focused events and activities in Seattle amid next summer’s World Cup are proceeding as scheduled, even after Iranian and Egyptian football federations voiced objections about a scheduled “Pride Match.”
Venue Regulations and External Festivities
Local organizers have confirmed they are “moving forward as planned” with celebratory programming outside the stadium. These events will take place around the Group G match between Iran and Egypt on 26 June. Furthermore, FIFA has a policy allowing rainbow flags inside the match venue.
“As the local organising committee, SeattleFWC26’s primary task is to get the city ready to host the matches and manage the fan activities beyond Seattle Stadium,” said a committee representative.
Cultural Background of Objections
Same-sex relations are criminalized in Iran, while in Egypt, public decency statutes are often used to prosecute individuals from the LGBTQ+ community. The Egyptian federation declared it did not want to be linked to celebrations that “directly contradict the social, religious and cultural values … in Arab and Islamic societies.” Similarly, the head of Iran's soccer body also raised “its opposition against the issue.”
FIFA's Stance Regarding Symbols
Fifa maintains full authority of stadiums on matchdays. Although its rules forbid banners and flags with overtly political content, it permits flags expressing “social and sporting symbols,” a category which includes the rainbow flag. This policy was applied at the most recent tournament in Qatar and was reaffirmed after incidents of flags being seized.
- This special fixture was an idea created to showcase the city's longstanding tradition of championing equality.
- An artistic competition has been commissioned to produce artwork to commemorate the event.
- Planners are committed to making sure all fans feel welcome in the Pacific Northwest throughout the tournament.
The region hosts one of the nation’s largest Iranian-American communities, a thriving Egyptian diaspora, and diverse populations representing all nations. “Our commitment is to guaranteeing all residents and visitors encounter the warmth, respect and dignity that characterizes our region,” the statement concluded.
