The Lions of Teranga's Emerging Talent Lamine Camara: From Dreams to Afcon Favourites.
When I enter the room, Lamine Camara picks up a football he clings to throughout our chat. This serves as a simple visual metaphor for a dream he has never let slip. âI only wanted the beautiful game; my mind was set on nothing else,â states this Monaco and Senegal playmaker.
His determination and natural ability won over teams such as GĂ©nĂ©ration Foot, Metz and Monaco. Yet, the hardest approval to secure didn't come from a club executive or manager, it was from his dad. âHe didnât want me playing soccer simply because he hadnât seen me play,â explains Camara.
Surmounting Early Hurdles
In time, on âa special day,â Camara earned his fatherâs blessing to pursue his career in the sport. Another challenge was his modest frame, which deterred his hometown team Casa Sports from offering him a deal.
Nevertheless, GĂ©nĂ©ration Foot â the institution that produced stars like Sadio ManĂ©, Papiss CissĂ© and IsmaĂŻla Sarr â were convinced immediately. After he earned the best player in a regional tournament, GĂ©nĂ©ration Foot were âastonishedâ to discover he was not tied down. They moved fast. âThey took me straight to the academy. They prevented me from going back to Casamance,â Camara said.
A Landmark Season and Continental Arrival
This move set him on a pathway to Europe. His breakthrough came in 2023, âan unforgettable year,â which began with him lifting the African Nations Championship. Just weeks later, despite fatigue, he played in the U-20 Africa Cup, leading his nation to the title and earning player of the tournament.
Soon after, he signed for FC Metz, emulating ManĂ©. âSettling in wasn't a challenge,â says the 21-year-old. He has lived by himself in Europe, a choice his relatives support to maintain his concentration.
Influences and Playing Style
Distractions are not really a problem for Camara, who draws inspiration from the Belgian maestro's âmodestyâ and exceptional playing qualities. Additionally, he's a huge fan of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His powerful shot and precision from set pieces are key strengths. Camara confesses he must to control his aggression, after being shown red at the start of his tenures at both Metz and Monaco. âIt's a trait I carry with me!â he jokes.
Monaco, Teammates and Upcoming Goals
At Monaco, he cherishes the guidance of teammates like Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. âWhen I heard about the interest in Pogba, I told myself we are fortunate,â Camara noted.
Right now, attention is firmly on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. âWe are the team to beat â there's no denying it. After defeating England in their own countryâŠ,â he says, referencing a memorable 3-1 victory in Nottingham.
Regarding a future move to the English top flight, he remains committed to Monaco for now. âI feel really comfortable here,â he insists. However, he's frequently teased by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Best Young Player awards. He laughs, yet remains determined about winning the senior top prize in the future.
âThe pressure is on us â we canât hide from that. Having beaten England at Wembley⊠it instills confidence.â
Moving forward, this talented midfielder combines humble beginnings, unwavering focus, and grand ambitions targeting to lead Senegal to continental glory and build his own lasting legacy in the game.
