People have come together around the country to mark 24 months since the Hamas-led attack on 7 October 2023, as negotiations advanced in Egypt over a resolution to the war in Gaza.

The attack resulted in in excess of 1,200 people killed and 251 others captured back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the single deadliest day for Jews since the Second World War.

Israel reacted by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has killed more than 67,000 people, according to the territory's Hamas-run health ministry. Its statistics are considered accurate by the UN and other world agencies.

"The bloodthirsty opponents have caused great damage, but they have not defeated us," the leader stated on Tuesday.

He also promised to "realize all the objectives of the war: the release of all the abducted, the destruction of the Hamas administration and the guarantee that Gaza will not pose a threat to Israel".

Memorial Ceremonies Across Israel

The Israeli government delayed official remembrance events until October 16th - after the conclusion of the religious holiday season - but ceremonies still were held throughout the country on that day.

A remembrance service for the loved ones of people who lost their lives in the Hamas attack was held in the coastal city. Arranged by the families themselves, it was broadcast throughout Israeli television channels.

Some time earlier, a moment of silence was respected around the country.

Ceasefire Talks in Egypt

Meanwhile, the conflicting parties' delegations convened in the Egyptian coastal city of the Egyptian city for a second day of third-party negotiations to discuss the provisions of the proposal.

A senior delegate familiar with the negotiations revealed that an late session of indirect talks began at 19:00 Cairo time.

The official said the earlier meeting ended without significant progress, because of conflicting views over the recommended Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas seeks to guarantee Israel does not restart fighting after the first phase of the arrangement.

He noted that the talks are "challenging and have not yet produce any real breakthrough," but noted that facilitators are making efforts to close the disparities between the two sides.

Key Issues in Discussions

  • A permanent truce
  • The exchange of the captives still held by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
  • The removal of Israeli forces from Gaza
  • Arrangements for relief supplies provision
  • Future governance of the territory

Public Reaction

In the city's memorial area that day, 29-year-old a woman - whose family member endured the attack on the outdoor event, where 378 people were lost their lives and dozens more were taken hostage by Hamas gunmen - shared: "No location appears as home now and until each abducted person return no one will feel safe."

"After we see everyone home again, we can breathe once more. Then we can start to heal," she added.

Near the leader's official dwelling in the capital, people assembled to demonstrate their support for the families of the abducted. Israel states 48 remain in detention in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are thought to be surviving.

Protester Atalia Regev stated: "It's necessary do every compromise needed for the abducted to come back home. But we really want guarantees that we will be secure."

Opinion polls now frequently demonstrate that approximately the majority of the population want the conflict to end in return for the freedom of the hostages.

Palestinian Situation

At the location of the music event, mourners gathered to honor the dead.

From the site, the sound of Israeli air strikes and artillery could be heard just a short distance away in Gaza, where observers said the intense Israeli attacks persisted.

In Gaza City, air and artillery strikes were documented in the morning of Tuesday in the western neighborhood, Rimal and locality districts and in the eastern neighbourhood of Sheikh Radwan, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwest.

"As the evening arrives, the dread arrives with it," evacuated Gaza City resident a mother, whose 17-year-old son was died by an Israeli air strike last year, explained.

"Me and my three children are afraid of the air strikes. All the night we are lying together, clinging, notably my youngest child who rests his face on me throughout the night."

"Constantly we check the news to see the situation. And I'm worried that this ceasefire will not be finalized and that the conflict will come back to us."

Health Emergency

The healthcare center in the urban area reported it had taken in the corpses of six people by the daytime, including three who lost their lives in an Israeli strike in the south part area.

A different healthcare center in the southern city of that area said additional fatalities had been brought there. A person was killed by Israeli soldiers while looking for assistance to the southern area, health workers said.
