The Princess of Wales's Traditional Christmas Musical Celebration Honours Community Volunteers

The Princess of Wales is hosting her yearly Christmas carol concert at the iconic London venue, with a congregation comprising royals, celebrities and local heroes who have made a difference in their neighbourhoods.

The sizable congregation will enjoy a mix of traditional hymns, orchestral pieces, and literary excerpts from performers including Chiwetel Ejiofor and Kate Winslet.

Centred Around Kindness and Compassion

The focus of the service, held in the candle-lit Abbey on Friday afternoon, is generosity and expressing affection towards one's neighbour.

Attending the event are a couple named the Cordiners, whose young girl was lost to a brain cancer, and who established a foundation, a charity called Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to help households where there is a youngster facing a life-limiting condition.

"Your efforts, love, and understanding, often without fanfare or recognition, and without any thought of thanks or praise, make an extraordinary difference to the lives of others," wrote Catherine in a note prior to the festive gathering.

A Gradual Return

The princess has been making her own gradual return to public life subsequent to her illness and medical care, in November making her major oration since 2023, in which she talked about recognising the "quiet, often invisible work of caring".

Music and Opportunity

Guests arriving at the Abbey will enjoy performances from talented youth performers supported by the charitable trust Future Talent, co-founded by the former royal to increase availability of music lessons.

An 18-year-old named Carys Wood, who performs on the trumpet and is from Wales, has been assisted by the organisation, with grants helping towards equipment, teaching, and travel fees - and she said it was "incredible" to be performing at tonight's service.

"Music can be very expensive," Carys said. She is now a student at the prestigious music academy, and added that "each individual ought to be given the possibility" to develop their musical skills.

A Family Affair

Her younger sibling Eliza, aged 11, who performs on the brass instrument, will likewise attend the Abbey. "I never thought I'd be able to play there in front of so many important people," she said.

Attending the service will be people from various age groups.

That will encompass Saphia Turner, aged nine, winner of a young hero award, who sells artwork and carries out sponsored challenges to generate funds for community pantries.

Seasonal Ambiance and Entertainment

The Abbey has been adorned with specially made wreaths, with TV cook Mary Berry and florist Simon Lycett contributing to their design.

The musical lineup includes singer Katie Melua, the Westminster Abbey choristers and a maritime folk band from Cornwall, the group Fisherman's Friends, who said the opportunity to perform was "the icing on the cake for us."

The festive event titled 'Together at Christmas' will be televised and shown on a major network on Christmas Eve.
