The retail giant Introduces Purchase Limits on Pokémon Trading Cards

In a significant move, Walmart has started implementing purchase restrictions on how many Pokémon trading card products customers can acquire during one shopping trip. This policy was activated as of early November, based on an internal announcement distributed to employees.

Tackling Reseller Problems

Although not formally announced by Walmart, numerous sources suggest this decision was influenced by a viral TikTok video that showed a customer purchasing a massive amount of Pokémon card products at a checkout counter. The store manager featured in the video faced significant criticism for permitting the bulk transaction to go through.

Policy Details and Potential Loopholes

The updated guideline specifies that shoppers may only buy a maximum of five trading card boxes or packs each time they enter. Yet, the wording has sparked debate due to its lack of clarity. Precisely what counts as a "box" is not defined, and if someone could still purchase five high-value Elite Trainer Boxes remains ambiguous.

Additionally, because the restriction is based on individual trips, in theory an eager reseller could return repeatedly—purchasing the maximum each time—to accumulate significant stocks throughout the day.

The Reseller Crisis

To most players, such efforts might seem excessive, but for scalpers, it's standard practice. Over the past few seasons, speculators have greatly contributed to widespread shortages of Pokémon cards, driven by the TCG's growing fame.

Some resellers aim to resell sealed items at a markup, whereas some hunt for valuable pulls that can fetch extraordinary prices. As an example, the Mega Lucario ex card from the latest set is currently selling at prices exceeding eight hundred dollars in online marketplaces.

Upcoming Releases

This policy change aligns with the approaching launch of the latest Pokémon expansion, coming on November 14th. Early listings already show chase cards like the Mega Charizard X Ex being offered for around fifteen hundred dollars, emphasizing the persistent interest and likely reseller attention.

With any luck, the retail limits will curb mass buying and increase access for true fans and casual players alike.
