Torrential Precipitation Exacerbate Circumstances for Evacuated Residents of Gaza, Agencies Alert
Heavy storms over the last seven days have worsened the extremely difficult circumstances of the vast number of evacuated Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, according to relief agencies.
"Terrible" Conditions Creates Serious Dangers
A representative described the previous night's conditions as "horrendous", with downpours so intense that as much as 15cm (6in) of water was seen on the ground.
"The recent weather was really difficult for the people. The storms were so powerful... And the gales were so strong," stated the spokesperson.
Authorities voice grave worry that children sheltering in makeshift shelters in wet attire will fall victim to hypothermia and various illnesses.
Fatalities and Extensive Destruction
The health ministry have reported that one baby has succumbed from the cold and a minimum of 11 other people have died in structural failures caused by the storms.
Additional accounts indicate a greater death toll. Officials stated that several homes had collapsed completely and scores had been partly destroyed.
- Roughly 55,000 families affected by the weather.
- More than 40 official refuges submerged.
- Many people compelled to relocate again.
Aid Operations Considered Insufficient
Groups have stepped up deliveries of shelter, bedding and garments following the ceasefire began, but they emphasize there is remains not enough aid getting in.
"We are operating tirelessly to bring in that aid and to distribute it, but the size of the requirements is so vast that we continue to see many thousands of families and children who are truly suffering nightly," cautioned one official.
Ongoing Challenges and Ceasefire Plans
The next stage of the truce includes proposals for the reconstruction of Gaza, along with political arrangements, the withdrawal of military forces, and other provisions.
Relief groups have highlighted the need for "expanded and ongoing relief to address pressing and future requirements."
The hostilities was triggered by an attack in late 2023. Following actions have caused a significant number of lives lost in the area, as per medical figures.
