Users Coming Off Weight-Loss Medications Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

New research suggests that patients who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight people frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People using such drugs should be informed of the risk of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a return to starting weight within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.

Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally have a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Fast Regain

Doctors suggest the way of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal may cause the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Disease?

Health authorities suggest the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Testimonies

People who have stopped the jabs report a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if something that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described an individual.

This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Survey data show that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is more common among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, experts caution that while the jabs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing lifestyle management.
