What We Know Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Terrorist Incident

At least 16 lives lost their lives and more than 40 sustained injuries when assailants shot at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local authorities are describing as a act of terrorism.

According to the most recent information, officials have stated the death toll stands at 16, which includes one of the alleged gunmen. Furthermore, 42 wounded individuals were transported to the hospital.

The victims are still awaiting publicly named, but authorities state their ages are from 10 and 87 years old.

Listed are the individuals who have been named to date.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Reportedly a father of five children, he was the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, as stated by his wife.

She described the moments before the attack, stating they had been standing together when the gunfire began. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having endured unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Officially, the Foreign Minister said that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the message continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was also killed during the attack, as per reports referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospital, many remain under care, with a number in a critical state. Those hurt comprise two police officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Called a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Reports indicate he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He told reporters he listened to “a large number” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
